![]() ![]() In Like a Dragon: Ishin, Ryoma is an orphan taken in by the Magistrate. While the story of Like a Dragon: Ishin is fictional, Ryoma Sakamoto was a real samurai, and many of his recorded traits are seen in his fictional counterpart here. ![]() Like a Dragon: Ishin stars Ryoma Sakamoto. These are certainly interesting times and along with them come those that rise to meet them. It was also interesting to briefly see Kiyomizu Temple a couple of times, as I’ve visited it in person. While I can’t comment on the accuracy compared to 1800s Japan, it certainly builds a great atmosphere. On the topic of the setting, places are based on real locations. I didn’t find it harmed the overall story, but some of the minor details may be lost along the way. An in-game glossary helps with some of these, but others are notably absent. It often uses Japanese terms such as joshi, shishi, bakufu, and more. This is an incredibly interesting setting, but I believe some aspects won’t be fully grasped by those unfamiliar with Japanese history or even those who are more familiar with the English terms. Like a Dragon: Ishin represents this well by showing political motives for many of the actions in the story, weaving in interests from loyalists, those who desire change, and even foreigners both good and bad. While perhaps not as turbulent as the Sengoku period, this is a time of significant change in Japan. We see this early on when a sick young girl doesn’t bow for an upper-class samurai and he orders her mother’s death. ![]() ![]() Insult someone high-ranked enough? It won’t end well. While it’s worse in some regions than others, the class system is often seen as more important than anything. Not everyone is happy with the internal state of affairs either. Isolated for centuries, foreign weapons are beginning to enter the country and anti-foreign sentiment is high with some extremist groups appearing. Like a Dragon: Ishin is set as the Edo period of Japan is coming to a close. While Yakuza fans will recognize much in Like a Dragon: Ishin, it’s a very different setting and serves as a standalone title. Now in 2023, it’s been remade in Unreal Engine 4 and released worldwide. With the mob gone, Yae is able to free the hostages and provide evidence of Kurata’s crime, locking him away, and with that, Yae’s mission is done, and onto new adventures, she goes.Originally published on PlayStation 3 and 4 in 2014 in Japan, Like a Dragon: Ishin is a spin-off of the famous Yakuza series of Action RPGs. Use whatever style you are most comfortable with and keep moving, using healing items when needed, and you should come out on top! Maneuverability and space to move will be your best friend in this fight as you try to whittle down his henchman. Inside the manor, you will find yourself face to face with quite a small army of enemies ahead of you, all backed by a strong elite enemy as well who will charge you every chance he has, swinging his sword. Before too long, you should be able to press onward to your main objective, rescuing the hostages! First, you should get yourself out of the middle of the circle they put you in, followed by the previous strategies of taking down Shinohara’s help first, then focusing on him. Your old pal Shinohara is there to greet you along with a number of his friends, all surrounding you. Agree to help her request and get ready for a fight! Return to the blacksmith, and you will see Yae in her usual spot just outside the building, speak to her and learn about a big job she needs help with. ![]()
